Project Background:
The popularization of scientific knowledge is key to enhancing public literacy. The Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG), as a professional government body, is dedicated to disseminating meteorological science to the public. However, many specialized observation instruments, like the “Stevenson Screen” (百叶箱), while being iconic facilities at weather stations, remain abstract and remote concepts for the general public, especially for young people. The challenge was how to present this “hardcore” scientific instrument in a fun, intuitive, and interactive way to facilitate public education and enhance the Bureau’s brand image.

Solution & Design Philosophy:
We custom-designed the “Stevenson Screen Mini Building Block Set” for the Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau. Its core philosophy is “to transform abstract scientific principles into the joy of hands-on creation.”
-
Scientifically Faithful and Intricate Recreation: Our design team conducted in-depth research into the structure of a real Stevenson Screen. The product not only accurately replicates its iconic white, louvred exterior—which ensures air circulation—but also ingeniously features an openable door. This key highlight allows users to peer inside and clearly see the core observation instruments, such as the dry-and-wet-bulb thermometers, simulated with building block pieces. This design makes a scientific “black box” transparent and understandable.
-
An “Edutainment” Interactive Experience: The assembly process itself is an immersive learning journey. As users build the screen’s support structure, body, and internal instruments, they naturally come to understand its construction and basic principles. This “learning through play” method creates a far more profound and engaging experience than passively reading text or looking at pictures.
-
Brand Details that Highlight Official Identity: On the model’s base, we meticulously crafted a nameplate featuring the official emblem and name of the Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau. It also includes the instrument’s name in both Chinese (“百叶箱”) and Portuguese (“Abrigo meteorológico”), fully reflecting Macao’s unique cultural character. This not only enhances the product’s authority and collectible value but also makes it a perfect extension of the Bureau’s official image.
Core Application Value:
-
An Innovative Vehicle for Science Education: This building block set completely changes the traditional, one-way model of science popularization. It can be used as a teaching aid during the Bureau’s science outreach activities and lectures, or as a competition prize or souvenir, greatly stimulating young people’s interest in meteorological science.
-
Shaping an Approachable Government Brand Image: Through such a charming and well-crafted creative product, the Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau successfully closes the distance with its citizens. It presents a rigorous scientific institution in an approachable and friendly light, effectively enhancing its public affinity and reputation.
-
A Unique Cultural Memento: For guests visiting the Bureau or citizens participating in its events, this building block set is a highly distinctive and memorable souvenir. It represents not just a learning experience but also a unique symbol of Macao’s scientific culture.
Project Summary:
The Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau “Stevenson Screen” building block project is a model case for our company in the direction of “transforming specialized knowledge into cultural and creative products.” We have proven that even the most professional scientific instruments can be turned into widely popular educational products and cultural symbols through creative building block design. This case not only provides an innovative approach for government agencies and research institutions in their public communication efforts but also once again highlights our company’s powerful design and transformation capabilities in making any abstract concept tangible and fun.
